2024 Goals:
Restore the Portland cliffs through community involvement, support, and action. The Portland Coastal Cliffs
Inc. (PCCI) current focus is to continue to remove the Sea Spurge from Nuns Beach, as well as planting
indigenous plants and removing weeds from the cliff. PCCI is in consultation with the Sea Alliance, Dr Ian Chivers, Gunditj
Mirring, Glenelg Shire Council, CFA, and DELWP to work together to protect and maintain this biodiverse
iconic habitat.
2024 Projects developed, or in the process of developing:
o For PCCI members participating in PCCI activities, to be covered by LVI Landcare Insurance the event must be an organized event by PCCI. E.g. Members who remove sea spurge when walking on the beach will not be covered by insurance if it is not an organised event by PCCI such as a working bee, Centrelink volunteer program activity or arranged event.
PCCI Working Bees are held the First Saturday of each month from 9:30 - 10:30 am meet at the Nuns Beach BBQ Shelter (unless otherwise advised:) Next Working Bee: Saturday 4th May
o People should wear gloves and glasses and make sure they are wearing appropriate clothing to protect them; some people are more sensitive to the sap from sea spurge than other people.
o Nuns Beach Coastal plan in consultation with SEA Alliance
o Removal of coastal tea tree which is not endemic to this area and has become invasive to the local habitat, under the guidance of Rosemary Wilson - Nature Glenelg Trust – we plan to replace with indigenous grasses that will be safer and pleasant to walk on as well as ascetically appealing.
o PCCI Covid 19 plans developed and submitted to council for working Bees, SUFM area spurge weeding project and upcoming projects. Regularly updated
o Apply for relevant grants to complete projects at Nuns Beach that will restore and protect the beach and cliffs
o Erect a “Storyboard” at the entrance of Nun’s Beach which would include Indigenous artwork, some history on the naming of Nun’s Beach, images of local flora and fauna and details of the Portland Coastal Cliffs Inc group.
